Cold weather

by Editor on January 7, 2010

It’s cold in the midwest. Or as Brick Tamland would say, the mideast! We are coming out of an ice age. That’s science. This planet constantly changes, I’m not arguing that. What I’m skeptical about is our impact on it.

Are we affecting our OWN environment? Possibly. If we over extend our reliance on natural resources, we may run out, eventually. But right now, we have plenty of coal and oil to last for a long long time. That eventual worst case scenario only makes US extinct, or at least killed off in large numbers. An asteroid hit 65 million years ago, and some say made dinosaurs extinct, and others say they just evolved into birds. My point is, if we use up ALL the natural resources we rely on, WE must evolve or become extinct. The Planet isn’t going anywhere. We aren’t hurting the earth. It’s gonna be here long after the humans have gone. So in my opinion, we need a little honesty when it comes to global warming, recycling, etc. We are trying to protect OUR lifestyles, and those of our kids, and so on. We aren’t destroying or trying to protect the earth. We are trying to save ourselves.

I made fun of Al Gore on Twitter the other day, cuz it’s FREEZING in Kansas. I’ve never seen it this cold, with this much snow. My friends that have lived here their whole lives say the same. Global warming isn’t happening this year. It’s colder than it has been here in years. Someone responded, “it’s just north america” with an article in National Geographic linked. Really? You believe that GLOBAL warming is only affecting the REST of the planet right now? What, is America special? We use more fossil fuels than every other country except China, if my lack of research is correct. Yet we are the only continent right now that is colder than it has been in years, and the rest of the world is experiencing the TRAGIC effects of global warming? Are you picking up my sarcasm? Cuz I’m laying it on pretty thick. (thank you Richard in Tommy Boy)

I’m not BUYING into Al Gore’s ideas about global warming. Why is he so much more wealthy now than when he was VP of this country? Public speaking engagements paying that much? He’s worth more than Clinton now, and he was PREZ! Do a quick search, you’ll see. Clinton’s TOGETHER are worth between 10-50mil. Gore is worth 100 million! That’s Hillary AND Bill doing public appearances, speeches, investments, etc. and they can’t keep up with little Al? Something stinks here, and I think it’s global warming. I have a friend in Indianapolis that says, “Never trust rich people, they got that way by screwing people over.” I used to disagree with her, because I’ve got some money, and the only people I screwed over were the owners that paid me to do what I wanted to do in the first place! Now I’m beginning to see her point. (thanks KJ, I’m a little slow!)

I think Al is cashing in on global warming by using his political clout to push agendas for the green lobbyists. Of course I have no proof, since I’ve done no active research. What I have done is read things over the years, been outside this year, it’s been unusually cold, and I’ve made my own opinions based on that. That was a run-0n sentence, kids.

And liberals, please don’t try to “enlighten” me with your gibberish. The only reason I can’t stand liberals and democrats is that in order to be in their “club” you MUST believe in two things. 1)Republican’s are evil rednecks, and 2) Republican’s are evil rednecks. Your refusal to listen to other points of view makes you elitist snobs. I hear all the time about how Democrats are just trying to enlighten the rest of America about the problems facing society, as if somehow the rest of us are living somewhere else or cannot possibly fathom the depths of your intelligence.

But I digress. I’ve stopped paying attention to what I’m writing, so I’m sure you have too. I’m gonna go enjoy the snow day with my chilluns! Shibby!

Stick to basketball, I’m doubting your degree is in Environmental Science. Also, there is an Iceberg the size of Manhattan floating towards Australia right now. But its snowing in East Dickfuck, KS so that must not be happening. Politics are for schmucks because both parties are out to screw you, its not mutually exclusive. Why is it so bad to cut back on doing crappy stuff to the environment? Even if Global Warming doesnt exist, is there some potential harm to not living like a Jackass? Or does knocking potentially useful things justify your own actions and leave you feeling superior? Hell at least you cut back on the money going to big oil if you drive a Prius and save yourself a few bucks in the process.

Ok, first, I found your blog and twitter from the journal world story, so hi. I was interested in reading your stuff just because I’ve been a KU fan since coming to Lawrence, and was always a Scot Pollard fan, just because you seemed like a real person. Anyway, I’m using my snow day to catch up on internet stuff, so it’s your and anyone else reading (un)lucky day.

Anyway, I consider myself a liberal, when I do consider myself at all politically. However, I feel that like all things, it’s better to think for yourself instead of following any party lines. As for global warming, I find it interesting that all the research there is WAS pointing to it being truth had fabricated data, and all the raw data was “destroyed”. Not a very scientific study. I do think that you can’t base your theory on this one frigid winter, but if I lived in New York with 55 inches of snow, I would probably change my tune on that.

I have not lived in Kansas all my life, so I can’t attest to the long term norms of Kansas, and I don’t intend to google it, but this does seem like the coldest, snowiest I’ve seen it. As for the climate “change”, I don’t know if there is one, but it has happened in the past, we will probably see it many times again. Whether we are responsible because of pollution on not, I do think we need to worry about the environment. I don’t pretend to know about the greenhouse effect and the polar ice caps, but I do know that with all the pollution, we have more and more kids with asthma and allergies.

So if I would have said that shorter, it would be, “I agree, but I consider myself liberal”.

Have a great day.

If you went through your money like Americans use natural resources, you might be moving to the Dakotas instead of San Diego. We might have enough coal, oil and natural gas but I think we’re not doing enough to make sure that we don’t run out of drinkable water. I think it’s worth the time to recycle whatever we can. I know you didn’t talk much more about recycling other than the line at the beginning of your post but thought it’s worth mentioning.

I think we’re isolated from a lot of what’s going on environmentally because we’re here in the midwest and trees still cover a good chunk of ground but you’d have a better perspective on that since you’ve traveled a whole lot more than I have or will.

I think it hurts your argument when you say that ALL of us liberals and Democrats MUST believe that ALL Republican’s are evil rednecks. Some are evil, the rest are rednecks. Ha, only kidding. I’m surrounded by Republicans so I don’t get many shots in like that. Honestly though, it’s discouraging how people in power abuse it regardless of affiliation and it’s hard to support anyone in office or running for it when they don’t represent the people.

One last thing, are you fan of Penn & Teller’s Bullshit or Jesse Ventura’s Conspiracy Theory?

From a long-time fan.

I didn’t mention anything about the way I live, Mr. sensitive. My degree was in education. Good for you I’m not teaching your kids (if you have any) and not wasting time on the internet, retired…I DID however mention that those are my opinions, which were directed mostly at Al Gore, and not you. Save your anger towards the midwest for the people on the coast who use up all the energy and then want the people in the midwest to grow their food AND conserve for them.

I am a fan of Penn and teller’s show. Never heard of Jesse Ventura’s Conspiracy theory.

The trouble with oil isn’t that we are going to run out but that we’ve reached the upper limit in the daily production. Growth has depended upon an ever-increasing supply of liquid fossil fuels. The countries exporting oil are either facing production declines (such as Mexico) or are using more and more of their own product. The Indians and Chinese are now in competition with us for oil. The future is going to be about walking, cycling and using transit whether we like it or not.

Did you ever consider substitute teaching just for the heck of it? I always thought it was cool to have met you at a Bob Chipman basketball camp years ago. I even painted my finger nails once to be like you but my dad made me take it off. I’d also let my sideburns grow wide and down to my jaw line. Fun times.

Conspiracy Theory is on truTV formerly Court TV every Wednesday.
